Afore dawn on River Wharfe

Description

I shot this before the sun had risen. It is of the river Wharfe flowing through Burnsall. I took shots there 6 months ago in winter and I just wondered how the scene would look in summertime. The village of Burnsall has only 80 permanent inhabitants. I know that 40 years ago there were 100. It has a tiny shop and one pub. The bridge has been photographed many thousands of times so I needed to show it in a somewhat different light. The winter sun, the time of day and the angle of the light show it quite differently from other photos.
The village itself is a tourist attraction. It's in the heart of the Yorkshire dales; the Vikings knew of it and the Saxons built a church there. A church called St Wilfred's still stands on the same spot. When the Picts from Scotland mounted raiding parties into England the inhabitants of the village used to go to a nearby village (even smaller) called Thorpe. It used to be called Thorpe- in-the-Hollow. It's hard to find even nowadays since the roadsigns seem to point all over the place except to Thorpe. There was witchcraft in the area as it was thought to be a magical place. If you look to the distance you'll see in some seasons that the vegetation is dark green in almost a straight line coming down from the hills and light-green at the other side. And differing plants grow on either side.. One side has limestone as the base rock and the other has millstone-grit. The limestone is porous and alkaline and the millstone grit is the opposite.. Anyway, that's the scientific explanation. The Romans spent time in Burnsall too and in a nearby tiny village of Appletreewick, they left a horse trough..it was there 40 years ago...I don't know about now. Can you guess what food the Romans famed Appletreewick for? Actually it was onions!!!. It was also a bewitching area too because the last Ice Age stopped just up the road at Thorpe; that is, the ice flow stopped and left huge mounds of earth which are full of fossils. If you visit the area you'll see lots of strangely rounded hills left by the glaciers.. Folklore suggests they are the storehouses of Trolls...a bit like Goblins. I've never seen a Hobbit there but...the river bank would be ideal for their homes;in fact, the area looks like The Shire; but then it is... Yorkshire
