Description

Yorkshire. You must enlarge this photo!!!! A quick shot. My dog Benji had spotted prey. I have not trained him to hunt. It is his instinct I have discovered. There is a man in the distant tree. I could not see him. Even my camera could barely make him out.  But Benji knew he was there somehow and immediately altered his stance to attack position. Notice the arch of Benji's back, the position of his backlegs. The right paw off the ground ( You can see this attack position in a cheetah milliseconds before it sprints after a zebra ).

Of course Benji would never hurt any living creature. He is a loving soul and knows nothing of meat and where it originates.

Benji has been ill recently and off his food. Today he only ran at between 15 and 20 mph. His usual cruising speed as I watched him once run in a field parallel to cars on a road is 30 to 35mph. I do not know his top speed. He is a cross between a whippet and a border collie. I think there is terrier in his genes too. Originally the border collie cross with whippets was introduced because whippets have a tendency to break their thin legs. The border collie cross made a stockier dog but slower. I confess I am not accustomed to fast dogs. His reaction speeds not so much in running but when I play with him in close encounters are near frightening. Much of it must be anticipation. He uses his powerful back legs like a kangaroo kick-boxer and has punched me in play many times. He uses his front legs like a conventional boxer making jabs left and right or both together and he even does sweeping side punches ( I don't know the boxing term for them...open armed sweeping punches or slaps ) He chases after rabbits but slows down when he outruns them. I noticed this first when he got within a few feet of a young bunny. He stopped and looked back at me and with dangling tongue laughed as only dog owners know a dog can laugh

Whippets  ( a smaller and cheaper version of the greyhound ) were first used in my poor northern England enabling the catching of rabbits for the pot.
