I was there for a couple of weeks and I was pretty anxious when I saw a whole "chimney" or "column" of these gnats (midges) near the Bay of Quinte at sunsetting time primarily in groups of trees with some near the waters edge.
I figured I'd be bitten to hell because I seem to be the favorite meat of gnats around English lakes at certain times of the year. However I wasn't bitten, not one bite. I learned later that these particular gnats CANNOT bite,they belong to the family Chironomidae. They were content to stay broadly where you can see them in the photo making actually wonderful moving living kaleidescopic patterns in the setting sun. I never thought I would find gnats beautiful but they were magnificent.
