Description

Wetwang is a small village in Yorkshire not far from Hull and Malton. It's quite place in the historical sense. Vikings, and Normans were certainly there and probably Saxons too though I haven't read a reference to the latter. An Iron Age chariot was unearthed there. The present population numbers about 700.

People have speculated about the origin of the name...some saying it's to do with a "wet field" and others feel it has something to do the Norse term "vaett-vangr", which means a field for the trial of legal action.

My own opinion is that it is an onomatopoeic word. The village is in an area of wetland..famous for ducks and other water fowl. Well, if one quickly repeats the name of the village in a low voice one may hear something equivalent to "quack-quack"...the noise of ducks. Our ancestors were not without humour in their use of words and rarely, I think, delved into old Norse and Latin dictionaries to help them name that little place down the road.
